It's a quiet day in the office. Everyone has just finished their lunch break and they're going back to work. Two unusual clients, a redneck and a dog trainer, are working with their respective financial consultants, but otherwise, the office is mostly empty. Someone knocks on the door.

George frowned at the man that he was talking to. "So, basically ya reckon that if I invest in this here computer corporation, you guys will give me back more money? How do I know that you ain't just gonna run off with it? Once, when I was with by buddy John, he told me about this time that someone took his money. I reckon this might end up that that."

There was a knock on the door. George attempted to spinned around in the swivel chair he was in and faced the door that was recently answered.

A policeman is standing outside. He looks a little bedraggled, and looks around a second before answering.
"There've been a few riots near the southern edge of the city, so the police force is going around warning people. For the next few hours, we'd recommend that you lock doors, throw curtains over the windows, and stay quiet. Thank you."

He closes the door and moves on to the next house.
There are no curtains.
John rushes up to the door, and before opening it, stares at the man looking for curtains near the door. "Hey, no hard feelings, but next time let one of the employees answer the door. Okay?"
He starts out and yells to the police officer, "Hey! How long do you think the riots are going to last? And what are the riots about? I hadn't heard anything about them!"
The police officer is pretty far along the street, but still within yelling distance. "Just stay in your building until further notice!" He shouts.

George got up from said swivel chair and walked to the open door, leaning on John's shoulder. "Well, I haven't heard of any riots either, but once my buddy Bill was part of this riot in Georgia, and they broke into this burger place, and..." his voice trailed off as he realized nobody was listening. "Well, if we're gonna hole up here for a few hours, we'd best get acquainted." he held his hand out to John, whom he was leaning on with his left arm. "George Maxwell."

John shook his hand. "John Smith. Now, I'm no doctor, but it sounds like this is more than one isolated riot, otherwise the police would be busy containing it and arresting the members, instead of warning businesses of it. We'd better get barricading."

"I think you've got a point there, mister. But hey, if this is more than one 'isolated riot', then shouldn't we cover up the windows with something a bit more substantial than those fancy window covers?" He took a look at the wooden floorboards and smiled. "I reckon we've got great barricading material right here," he said, pointing.

"Well...." John frowned and scratched his head. "How about we try and just use the tables for now. I don't want to get fired over a hunch."
There were a few other people in the room, but none had heard the decision yet.
"Everyone, listen up! Some riots are coming through the city, so we're going to need everyone to take their computers off their desks and begin pulling the desks over here, towards these windows!"
The few clerks who were in looked confused, but did as they were told. At the moment, John was the senior officer.

"Okay, will do" Riley starts helping the clerks. "Sorry about answer the door, but is it okay if I bring my dog Misty inside?" I left her tied up outside" "I'm Riley Andy, you can call me strange if you want."

"Why would I call you Strange?" John questioned. "And you can grab your dog, but you'd better hurry."
Desks and tables were beginning to be stacked up at the foot of the window.

Far to your left, there is a huge ruckus of cars honking and people yelling, etc. Smoke is rising from buildings and from the street a little beyond that. The entire road you're on is full of cars, but they aren't being quite as loud.

Inside, construction has continued. Desks are piled to near the top of the windows, but there are many spaces light is still coming through, because of how the desk legs take up so much space. Every desk and table has been used. The few secretaries that were there sit back, disgruntled, as they stare at what they could be using to earn a promotion. One steps up and asks John, "Is that all? There's nothing left to use as a barricade." John thinks for a second, then answers. "Yeah. It looks like there's not much else for us to do here. Anyone want to find a TV we can use to see the news?"

You notice a TV in the back corner of the room. John frowns and says, "It's still just a riot, if a big one. I think they won't bother coming in this building if we just stay quiet." You can't see much through the pile of desks, but you can hear the sounds of yelling coming closer. Helicopters are beginning to pass over the area more frequently.

John walks over to the TV, motioning for everyone to join him. He waits a little for everyone to get to the TV, then turns it on, quickly lowering the volume. On-screen, a reporter is covering something she calls "African Rabies", which has begun to show up around the world.
"Well, that's not really what we're looking for," John says, and he turns the channel.
The next scene shows a traffic helicopter flying over a part of New York City near the building they're in. Below it is a huge traffic jam. There is no sound from below, but some buildings are burning. Everyone watches the scene for the second, and then the TV and lights turn off.
John looks around for a second at the now-dark interior of the building. The sun is beginning to set outside, so there's almost no light filtering through the pile of tables.
"Can someone find a flashlight?" he asks. "I don't know how long this outage will last, but I'd rather not be blind when the riots get here."
He turns to begin rummaging in a closet. After a few minutes of not finding anything, one of the interns motions him over to a window through the big pile of desks. "Look at the streetlights," she says.
He looks. Outside, most of the cars have been abandoned. The streetlights are all completely dark.
"Okay, listen up, guys." John calls. "The city streetlights are all off. Those streetlights run on a different grid than the office buildings, and are backed up by lots of generators. This is more serious than we had thought. I want everyone here to begin grabbing desks and tables from the second floor and passing them down here, quickly. And look for flashlights!"

Inside the filing cabinets are mostly office supplies. There's lots of paper, a staple gun, scissors, duct tape, and pens and pencils.
There's a janitorial closet nearby with mops, brooms, cleaning supplies, duct tape, and a staple gun.
John sees the supplies and grins. He grabs one of the mops, then separates the scissors into the two different blades. Then he takes one of them and duct tapes it firmly onto the handle of the mop. Finally, he cuts off the shaggy part of the mop with more scissors.
"Now, listen up, guys, there could be looters. I don't want to have to fight anyone, but we want to at least look menacing. I want everyone to find some kind of weapon to defend yourselves with."
Someone begins banging at the door. They're knocking urgently and rattling the doorknob.

The pounding gets louder and more urgent. Riley's dog has begun growling at the door. Finally, John decides to see who it is. He walks up to the pile of desks and looks through a window to see the knocker. It's the policeman. He has a gaping wound in his shoulder that's bleeding profusely, and his eyes are wild. He's still trying to open the door.
"Hey, guys, clear the desks! We need to help this guy!" John shouts. Some of the people in the building begin helping him clear the desks in front of the door, depositing them to either side.
They finally reach the door, and John unlocks and opens it. The policeman practically falls in, but he's up in a second. "CLOSE THE DOOR!" He bellows, and is feverishly working on pushing desks and chairs back to the door even before it's shut.
John glances around, surprised, then says, "Hey, you really need that wound treated. Let us push the barricade back; the riot is still back-" He cuts off, realizing the policeman hadn't heard a word he had said. Pushing through the pile of desks, he grabs the policeman and begins trying to pull him towards the back of the room, where there's a first aid kit. "Listen!" He says, while still struggling to hold the policeman, who is still feverishly fighting to get back towards the barricade. "You need medical attention right now! Just let us put the desks back. We still have plenty of time."
The policeman struggles for a moment more, then stops, after a few moments, he's blacked out.
John drags him to the back, where some employees are waiting. They take the policeman from him, then begin dressing the wound. The dog continues to growl at the policeman as John runs to the next floor to grab a bed for him. The sounds of the riot are getting closer and closer.
After a few minutes, the policeman's eyes jerk back open. He looks around wildly for a second, then lays back down. It looks like he has something to say.

The policeman turns and looks at you with wild eyes. His voice is weak, but scared, more terrified than seemed possible. "I...I was... Was knocking at a door, when they, they came from behind! They had looked like, ordinary homeless people, you know? I would have warned them, but it was more important to get the buildings..."
He stops, noticing that the group that has gathered to hear the story, and especially noticing their looks of skepticism.
"You didn't see them!" He shouts wildly. "You don't know what they can do!" Flecks of foam are beginning to gather at the edges of his mouth. "They tried to eat me!" He grabs Riley by the shoulders weakly and yells in his face. "EAT ME!"
Suddenly he collapses. John comes down the stairs with another person, carrying a bed, and they lift him onto it.

The policeman nods. He's begun to sweat, and is looking a little red.
What you can see of the wound through the bandage looks extremely bad. It's very torn up, and seems to be infected. The blood coming out of the wound is a sluggish, dark red, and the wound itself is extremely inflamed.
John calls everyone up to the front to defend, because the riot is almost to their building. The cars outside are very loud, and the people in them are beginning to get out and run through the streets. Everyone strains to see what they're running from.
A few try and get through the door in the office, but they can't open it or break through it because of the barricade behind it. The most determined begin to try and break the glass and crawl through the pile of tables, but seeing the employees inside with their spears and weapons discourages them. Meanwhile, the riot grows closer.

"Okay," John replies, "But not right now." Then he realizes how heartless that sounds and shakes his head. "We'll just take care of him as well as we can, while still defending ourselves."
Outside, the "riot" is beginning to reach their section. The employees watch in horror as a wave of people sweeps through the cars on the road. They go slowly, but irrepressibly. Some of them begin unintelligenly banging on the car windows, instead of just opening the door. Those in the cars are safe through the crash-proof glass. Outside, though, survivors and those who had chosen to run are being devoured by the mass. Riley's dog is barking crazily through the whole thing.
John doesn't know what to make of the mass. Was this actually African Rabies? He knew that rabies didn't do this to people. Was it a different mutation of rabies. The group readies themselves for defense as the first rioter notices them and begins walking towards them, when a scream pierces the relative silence behind the sound-proof glass.
None of them had noticed the policeman, who had gotten up and slowly walked towards one of the defenders, then grabbed him from behind. His eyes are deep, deep red, with hardly any pupil. He's growling and baring his teeth as he fights off the victim's arms and moves his head slowly towards her.

He turns just as the spear reaches him, so the spear hits the side of his head. A gaping wound has appeared, but strangely, no blood is coming out.
Right then John comes and stabs him again, in the chest, the policeman shudders, but continues trying to bite the secretary. Finally, John kicks it until it loses it's weakened grip on the secretary, then Riley stabs it again, successfully hitting it's eye and killing it. John realizes he's shuddering, and begins to bend down to examine the dead policeman when he hears the glass shattering.
The Rioters are beginning to attack the building in force. There are at least five on the other side of the barricade, ripping through tables and chairs, or climbing over them, to get at the survivors behind them. The employees are holding off as well as they can, but they need help. John runs towards them and begins stabbing at the attackers through the barricade.

A Rioter climbs over the top of the barricade, and is quickly joined by two more. They fall on one of the defenders.
John looks around for a second, at the carnage, the now-dead defender, and the three Rioters who are behind the barricade. "Retreat!" He shouts, then tries to defend the group as they make for the stairs. They couldn't afford to lose another person.

Before he can grab a table, the Rioters finally break through the barricade and come through in numbers. He and John race up the stairs, the Rioters close behind them, reaching for them. John realizes that there's no point building these temporary barricades. They need something made of stone or metal, with no hinges or access points.
There's a big safe on the 15th floor. The access code will take a few minutes to enter, and they'll need food and water for at least a day. There are mini-fridges on the 13th floor (employee offices). The question is putting enough obstacles between those floors and the Rioters. John follows everyone up to the 3rd floor, then quickly pushes more tables and chairs down the stairs. Everyone is already breathing hard.

John scowls and shakes his head, breathing hard as they run up another flight. "These stairs are made of metal! There's no way we'd get through them in time. Have any other ideas?"
The Rioters are falling behind, but are moving steadily. The group won't have time to grab food and still get in the safe.

"I dunno...." John frowns, trying to remember what large, movable structures there are in the building. "We have to decide. We might not be able to push the safe all the way to the stairs, but once we do, it will just keep falling down the entire stairway, destroying any chance for the Rioters to get up. It's either that or barricade ourselves inside the safe."

John laughed, then realized that he was being serious. "Hopefully it won't come to that.. For now let's just concentrate on the first part of the plan." The group had reached the 9th floor, most of the way to the safe. The Rioters were beginning to catch up. It seemed to John that they hadn't slowed down at all, but that was impossible. All people had limits to their endurance.
Behind them, a steady stream of Rioters was coming up the stairs. They stared straight ahead, unblinking, but still somehow always knew where the defenders were.

Everyone joins in, but the Rioters are already beginning to come up the stairs.
"On three!" John shouts. "One, Two, Three, HEAVE!"
They push the safe as hard as they can. For a few terrifying seconds it doesn't move.... and then it slowly begins to slide across the smooth tile floor towards the stairs.
Rioters are beginning to come up the stairs. The safe won't get there before some get to the people pushing the safe.

The safe continues to advance as George gets pushed farther and farther backwards. He's getting close to the end of the hall, where the Rioters will no longer be funneled and easy to stop. John pushes harder, and shouts, "We just need to get the safe into the hall to stop them! Push!"

He breaks off from the group and goes to help George. The safe is moving more slowly, but the Rioters are barely advancing.
